The Ujyalo Nepal Party (UNP) led by Kulman Ghising has submitted an application to the Election Commission to update its proportional representation (PR) list under the name of the Rastriya Pariwartan Party.
According to an Election Commission official, the UNP visited the commission on Sunday to update its PR list after separating from the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP).
The UNP has submitted the list under the name of the Rastriya Pariwartan Party, which was registered on November 16, 2025.
In the updated list, Anup Kumar Upadhyaya, the party’s former chair, is listed first under the Khas-Arya cluster, while Mahendra Lawoti is listed first under the Indigenous Nationalities cluster.
As the UNP faced the risk of losing its PR candidacy following its split from the RSP, it partnered with the Rastriya Pariwartan Party to submit an updated PR list. The Rastriya Pariwartan Party uses a flute as its election symbol.
Previously, the UNP had submitted a list of 18 names to the Election Commission. After the unification agreement with the RSP on December 29, those names were withdrawn and included in the RSP’s list.
However, only 14 names were included in the list submitted by the RSP. According to the commission, the updated list submitted under the Rastriya Pariwartan Party include the names from the UNP’s original list.
A member of the Rastriya Pariwartan Party said that the PR list has been updated to seek votes under the flute symbol.
The Rastriya Pariwartan Party had earlier submitted a list of 49 candidates to the Election Commission.
According to the party member, an understanding has been reached to unify with the UNP. The party includes leaders of the Gen Z movement, as well as individuals injured during the September 8-9 protests, the leader said.
UNP Vice-chairman Jitram Lama also confirmed that talks on unification with the Rastriya Pariwartan Party are underway. He said that immediately after separating from the RSP, the party submitted an application demanding that the original list of 18 names be retained.
“We had said that we would go to court if the list was not accepted. After that, the commission asked for three days’ time. At the same time, we are advancing talks on unification with the Rastriya Pariwartan Party,” Lama said.
