The central working committee of the Nepali Congress held a meeting on Wednesday afternoon at the party's central office in Sanepa, Lalitpur.
Leaders said that the meeting discussed the need to conduct conventions at only three levels, citing a lack of time to follow the original schedule introduced on December 1.
According to the initial calendar, the party was supposed to begin ward-level conventions on December 31 and complete the conventions of six levels before culminating in a central general convention from January 10 to 12.
However, the distribution and renewal of active memberships have not yet been completed. This has impacted the general convention schedule.
Taking this into account, the meeting discussed pushing ward conventions back by a few days and holding conventions at only three levels for now. A proposal was floated to hold ward conventions around January 4, regional elections on January 7-8, and the central general convention from January 10 to 12. Members of the committee are currently deliberating on this revised plan.
General Secretary Gagan Thapa said that the party must head into the general election only after holding its general convention, and suggested holding conventions at only three conventions as a way forward.
Leaders close to party President Sher Bahadur Deuba are of the opinion that if it is not possible to hold the general convention now, it should be postponed until Baishakh (mid-April to mid-May).
The faction led by General Secretary Thapa is reportedly preparing to push for a special general convention if a consensus is not reached on holding the general convention before the general election.
