After the Nepali Congress decided to hold its 15th general convention in Kathmandu from January 10-12, 2026, party leaders have begun internal preparations.
It is not yet certain who will compete for the post of party president, but leaders have started openly expressing their aspirations.
Former general secretary Shashank Koirala also said that he will reach a decision on contesting for the presidency after holding consultations.
“I had said I would run for president. Shekhar dai [Shekhar Koirala] is there. He is also interested; discussions are ongoing,” he told reporters in Chitwan on Tuesday. “One of us two will contest.”
He said there is very little time left for general convention preparations, adding that at least three months are needed to prepare for it.
“Time is short. If the general convention is not possible in Paush (January), it will be held after the elections,” he said.
Even though the party has decided to hold the general convention in January, it is still uncertain whether it will happen then, Koirala said. He said that everyone should start preparing for the general convention.
He also stressed the need to move forward by also involving Gen Z youths.
