Those who left the Nagarik Unmukti Party (NUP) and the Janamat Party recently are preparing to form new political parties.
A significant number of leaders, including patron Resham Chaudhary, quit the NUP recently.
Similarly, Senior Vice-chairman Abdul Khan, central spokesperson Sharad Singh Yadav, coordinator of the Janamat Youth Union Sanjay Kumar Yadav, coordinator of the Janamat Health Workers' Union CK Singh, Sudur Paschim in-charge Rajaram Chaudhary, and national council member Bikram Bahadur Bam left the Janamat Party, led by CK Raut.
They are preparing to register new parties to participate in the House of Representatives election scheduled for March 5, 2026.
According to Sharad Singh Yadav, who left the Janamat Party, they are preparing to launch a campaign called “Youth for Nation.” He said that their goal is to attract the youth, inspired by the momentum of the Gen Z movement, and expand the campaign to eventually develop it into a political party.
"If we had split the party, it would have been easier to bring in more supporters," Yadav told Setopati. "Since those who left the party have started a new campaign, it will take time to give it a broader shape. However, many friends are attracted to the campaign. We will connect with dissatisfied individuals and transform the campaign into a party."
They had been dissatisfied with Janamat Party Chairman Raut recently, concluding that he was running the party autocratically, with decisions lacking collective wisdom and ownership.
Following the Gen Z movement, they felt that the Janamat Party could neither capture the consciousness of the youth nor represent their sentiments, prompting them to organize a new campaign.
"We are organizing the campaign to participate in the election on March 5, 2026, while also engaging the younger generation," Yadav said.
Resham Chaudhary is also working to build a new campaign. He had formed the Nagarik Unmukti Party in January 2022 while in prison.
As Chaudhary was serving a life sentence after being convicted of serious criminal offense in the Tikapur incident of August 24, 2015, he could not become the party’s chairman. Therefore, he appointed his wife, Ranjita Shrestha, as the chair.
After receiving a presidential pardon from President Ram Chandra Paudel in June 2023, Chaudhary held the party’s first convention in December of that year and was elected chair. However, the Election Commission did not recognize the new working committee under his leadership.
On July 30, 2025, Chaudhary held a national gathering and replaced his wife with his father Lalbir as the party chair, but the Election Commission did not recognize the Balbir-led committee either. Chaudhary then started preparations to form a new party.
"We have already carved a new path. The campaign is expanding across the country," he told Setopati. "Intellectuals, whether affiliated with various parties or independent, are positive about the campaign."
He said that the blueprint for a new movement would be prepared by embracing the spirit and essence of the Tikapur rebellion. The new party, he added, would also carry the sentiments expressed on the streets during the recent Gen Z movement and their sacrifices.
"The Tikapur rebellion was an expression against centuries of oppression and discrimination by the state. The Gen Z movement was a revolt against corruption, irregularities, and lack of good governance in the governance system. We must embrace its spirit and give it a political direction," he said.
Referring to the protests of September 8 and 9, he noted that the movement has not yet subsided, likening it to a smoldering fire under the ashes.
"The major parties are still raising their heads, while the tendency to oppress, divide, and rule over smaller parties remains unchanged. The new youths rebelled against that too," he said.
Chaudhary said that a new party is being formed under youth leadership to represent their sentiments. He has already decided to name the new party Nagarik Unmukti Party Nepal.
"Let me tell you, we are forming a new party led by the new generation. The chair of Nagarik Unmukti Party Nepal will be a Gen Z youth," he said.
