Discussions at the President's Office, Shital Niwas since Friday morning have resulted in an agreement to dissolve the House of Representatives first and then appoint former Chief Justice Sushila Karki as prime minister (PM).
The decision to first dissolve Parliament and then appoint Karki as PM aligns with the demands of the protesting Gen Z youth, according to the President's Press Advisor Kiran Pokharel. He revealed that Karki's swearing-in ceremony as the head of the interim government will take place tonight at nine.
The appointment of PM had been delayed because President Ram Chandra Paudel and Karki, who was proposed as PM by Gen Z, could not agree on whose recommendation would be used to dissolve Parliament.
President Paudel had told Karki, "I will appoint you as PM," and then instructed her to dissolve Parliament and set an election date in the very first Cabinet meeting.
However, the Gen Z representatives insisted on their demand that an interim government could only be formed after Parliament was dissolved. This sticking point prolonged the negotiations.
Ultimately, a consensus was reached to first dissolve Parliament, as per Gen Z's demand, and then appoint Karki as PM.
