Swarnim Wagle, vice-president of the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), has filed a complaint with the Cyber Bureau of Nepal Police, claiming that a "deepfake" audio of him was created.
Wagle visited the bureau's office in Bhotahiti on Wednesday afternoon and registered the complaint.
Superintendent of Police Deepak Raj Awasthi, the bureau’s spokesperson, confirmed that the complaint has been registered.
"He has filed an application stating that an audio, made to sound like his, has been placed in a video content. He has stated that it is not his voice and that someone has created a deepfake," he said, "We are investigating this matter."
Various videos and text materials, purportedly containing Wagle’s statements on Nepal-India relations and border issues, were posted on social media. It was made to appear as if Wagle was having a conversation with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Wagle has objected to these materials, stating that they have drawn his serious attention.
He has also demanded that those posting such content and spreading rumors be brought to justice.
