The government has decided to appoint Chandra Kuber Khapung as the inspector general (IG) of Nepal Police.
A source said that the decision was made by a Cabinet meeting held on Friday.
Khapung is currently serving as the additional inspector general (AIG) and head of the Central Investigation Bureau (CIB).
The current IGP, Deepak Thapa, is set to retire from September 3 at midnight. Upon Thapa’s retirement, Khapung will become the 32nd IGP of Nepal Police.
Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli is scheduled to visit China on Saturday and return on September 3. Therefore, the Cabinet made the decision to appoint the IGP before his trip.
If the new Police Bill is not passed and implemented, Khapung will serve as IGP for only about three months. According to the Police Regulations, he will remain in the position only until December 9 due to the 30-year service limit . However, if the Police Bill is enacted, this could change.
Khapung was born on December 8, 1970, in Menchhayayem Rural Municipality-6, Tehrathum. He holds a master’s degree in gender studies and a bachelor’s degree in law.
He joined Nepal Police as an inspector on November 13, 1995.
