The government has appointed office-bearers to two transitional justice commissions.
A Cabinet meeting held on Wednesday evening appointed Mahesh Thapa as the chairperson of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission. Similarly, the Cabinet meeting appointed Lila Devi Gadtaula as the chairperson of the Commission of Investigation on Enforced Disappeared Persons.
Thapa, who hails from Sankhuwasabha, is a former high court judge.
Gadtaula is from Tehrathum. She is the first female chief secretary of Nepal.
Besides the chairpersons, the Cabinet meeting also appointed four additional members to each of the two commissions.
The members of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission are Achyut Prasad Bhandari from Jajarkot, Tika Prasad Dhakal from Panchthar, Padam Bahadur Shahi from Jumla, and Kumari Kaushalya Ojha from Kanchanpur.
Similarly, the members of the Commission of Investigation on Enforced Disappeared Persons are Gopalnath Yogi from Salyan, Agni Prasad Thapaliya from Jhapa, Sirjana Pokharel from Kathmandu, and Binita Nepali from Kaski.
Communications Minister Prithvi Subba Gurung said that the salaries and allowances of the commissions’ office-bearers will be equivalent to those of the National Human Rights Commission.
The Cabinet meeting on Wednesday also appointed Poshraj Pandey as a member of the Nepal Rastra Bank (NRB) governor recommendation committee.
A minister present at the meeting said that Pandey was appointed as a member of the committee based on a direct proposal by Finance Minister Bishnu Paudel.
Pandey's appointment comes after Bishwa Paudel resigned from the recommendation committee.
Pandey, nominated by the Nepali Congress, previously served as a member of the National Planning Commission.
He also worked as an economic advisor when Prakash Sharan Mahat was the finance minister.
