The Parliament will now operate every day except on Saturdays and public holidays.
During a discussion with the chief whips of political parties on Wednesday, Speaker Devraj Ghimire proposed conducting parliamentary business on all days except Saturdays and public holidays, citing the pressure to hold pre-budget discussions and also to discuss the government’s policies and programs, the budget, and the School Education Bill. The meeting endorsed his proposal.
A calendar will accordingly be presented at the meeting of the Business Advisory Committee scheduled for April 25.
"Parliament is under pressure due to the government's policies and programs, the pre-budget discussions under the Fiscal Procedures and Financial Accountability Act, and the budget. Parliament also has the responsibility to prioritize and pass the School Education Bill . Teachers have said that they will not return until the act is issued. They have also met me and urged me to take initiatives," Ghimire said.
He said that Parliament is preparing to prioritize the bill as the sub-committee has expressed commitment to submit its report by the May 6 deadline.
"We will secure a slot in the calendar to present the bill in Parliament on any given day. As soon as the committee submits its report, Parliament will begin the process of passing it. The Civil Service Bill is also expected from the committee. Keeping the technical constraints of the policies and programs and the budget in mind, we must be prepared to pass the education, civil service, and other bills within this session," he added.
