Former law minister Sher Bahadur Tamang has registered a private bill to legalize marijuana cultivation.
The CPN lawmaker from Sindhupalchowk has pointed that marijuana can be used to produce medicines and materials including clothes could be made with its fiber. He has listed ways in which marijuana can be used to generate income to support his bill to legalize its cultivation.
"It is necessary to allow controlled cultivation of marijuana decriminalizing the cultivation as the financial status of farmers in Nepal can be lifted through marijuana cultivation," the bill states.
Tamang registered the private bill with permission of the Law Ministry. The government generally prepares bills and presents them to the parliament for deliberation. But the lawmakers can also present bills of their own with permission from the Law Minsitry.
Tamang has become the first laemaker to register private bill since the reinstatement of parliament following Janaandolan II.
The then CPN-UML lawmaker Subas Chandra Nembang had earlier presented bill related to the bar council and Nepali Congress lawmaker Mahesh Acharya that related to human rights commission as private bills in the past.
