Senior-most justice Deepak Raj Joshi has set up benches at the Supreme Court (SC) as acting chief justice (CJ) on Thursday after CJ Gopal Parajuli was 'relieved of duty' on Wednesday. Justice Joshi confirmed with Setopati that he set up benches today after CJ Parajuli was sacked on Wednesday. Secretary of the Judicial Council Nripa Dhwal Niraula on Wednesday had taken a secretary-level decision stating that Parajuli is no longer in the office as he retired after crossing the age limit of 65 years on on August 5, 2017. Joshi had stated that he will work as CJ from today after Niraula wrote letter informing about the decision. Joshi has set up benches on Thursday accordingly.

The eight justices who had decided to boycott the benches set up by Parajuli have also returned to work. "We had said we will not remain in the benches set up by CJ Parajuli. The situation is not as uneasy as it was yesterday as he will not set up benches today. We will, therefore, go to the court today," one of those eight justices told Setopati.
