There's a particular kind of silence that fills an office when everyone is refreshing the same screen.
For three weeks, that was us. A small team in Kathmandu, watching a review status that refused to move, while somewhere else in the world outside our hands, outside our control, a decision was being made about whether the thing we'd built would ever reach the people we built it for.
Today, that silence is over. Khelro, SoftNEP's sports prediction app, is officially live on both the App Store and Google Play.
What we built and why we built it
Khelro started with a simple, familiar feeling, the one every football fan in Nepal knows by heart. It's the argument in the group chat about who's going to win Saturday's match. It's the friendly boast that City will win 2-1, made with total, unshakable confidence, twenty minutes before kickoff proves you wrong.
We wanted to give that feeling a home. Somewhere you could make your prediction, put your name on it and see it stand or fall against your friends, your college classmates, your office colleagues. No cash tables, no odds, no house edge. Just the purest version of what football fans already do for free, every single week, built properly for the first time.
That's Khelro. And this season, it's finally ready to open its doors.
The part of the story we didn't plan for
We had a launch date. We had a Gameweek 1 we were counting down to, the same way every fan we built this for was counting down to it. We wanted to be there the moment the whistle blew on the new season.
We weren't.
Getting an app onto the App Store meant going through Apple's review process, a process we respect, even after everything, because a safe App Store benefits everyone who uses one. But respecting a process and being ready for it are two different things. Ours took three submissions. Three different reasons for rejection. Weeks, when we had days.
Meanwhile, on Android, Khelro was ready and waiting almost from the start. And that created its own quiet heartbreak. People downloading the app, opening it up, excited to make their first prediction and finding a contest that hadn't opened yet. Because we'd made a promise to ourselves early on: we launch together, on both platforms, or we don't launch at all. Fair means everyone starts from the same line.
So we waited. And we asked the people who'd already found us to wait with us.
Today the wait is over
Apple has approved Khelro. It's live right now on the App Store. And on Google Play, where it's been sitting ready for weeks, the contest can finally open too.
Gameweek 1 has already come and gone without us. We won't pretend otherwise and we won't dress it up as anything other than what it was, a hard few weeks. But Khelro's season starts now, from Gameweek 2, on equal footing across every phone in Nepal that wants to join it.
If you've been waiting, and some of you have been waiting since before a ball was even kicked this season, thank you. Genuinely. You didn't have to stick around for an app that wasn't ready yet and you did anyway.
What happens now
Download Khelro on the App Store or Google Play. Set up your profile, join a group with your friends or start your own and make your first prediction before Gameweek 2 kicks off.
The leaderboard is empty right now. Every name on it will have started from zero, together on the same day. That's the part we're proudest of: not that we launched, but that we launched fair.
See you on the pitch even if it's just the one on your screen.
