The District Administration Office, Kavre, has banned vehicular movement along the Khurkot-Bhakunde Besi section of the BP Highway from 5 p.m. to 5 a.m.
Chief District Officer Gopal Kumar Adhikari said that the decision was made during a District Security Committee meeting following directives from the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA) and discussions between the chief district officers of Kavre and Sindhuli.
"Effective from today, May 5, 2026, vehicular movement along the Khurkot-Bhakunde Besi section of the BP Highway is completely prohibited from 5 p.m. to 5 a.m. until further notice," stated a notice issued by the District Administration Office, Kavre.
Furthermore, the meeting decided that traffic may be temporarily halted at any time depending on rainfall, potential flooding in the Roshi River, and overall weather conditions, said CDO Adhikari.
A section of the BP Highway stretching over 28 kilometers runs alongside the Roshi River. The highway was severely damaged by massive flooding in the Roshi River following heavy rains from September 26 to 28, 2024. Currently, traffic is being managed through temporary diversions while permanent reconstruction is underway.
Even light rainfall continues to cause flash floods in the Roshi River, disrupting traffic.
On Monday, five vehicles were stranded in floodwaters at Ghumaune Char Saya Besi in Roshi Rural Municipality-7.
"Considering the extreme difficulty of rescuing passengers from stranded vehicles at night – which put 89 lives at risk – and following directives from the NDRRMA as well as a telephone conversation between the chief district officers of Kavrepalanchowk and Sindhuli districts this morning, the District Security Committee has taken this decision regarding traffic management on the BP Highway," the notice read.
