An inauguration ceremony attended by two ministers was postponed after the statues of martyrs were found not to resemble their faces.
The inauguration of Gen-Z Memorial Park had been scheduled for Wednesday morning at the National Sports Council premises in Satdobato, Lalitpur.
Home Minister Sudan Gurung and Infrastructure Development Minister Sunil Lamsal had arrived for the inauguration of the park, where statues of 45 martyrs have been installed.
The ceremony was halted after the martyrs’ families complained to the ministers that the statues did not accurately resemble the deceased.
Ganesh Prasad Chaulagain, father of martyr Shreeyam Chaulagain, said that the martyrs’ families had raised their concerns about the statues with Minister Gurung.
“The work has apparently not been completed. It has been agreed that construction will be completed within a month so that the statues accurately resemble the martyrs, and the park will then be inaugurated,” Chaulagain told journalists at the park.
He said that the two ministers should currently be understood to have visited the site only for a field inspection.
“It has been said that the inauguration will take place after a month, once the statues are 100 percent accurate,” he said.
He added that construction of the park had begun while the interim government was still in office.
