The Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority (CIAA) has filed an appeal at the Supreme Court against the acquittal of 14 individuals, including then-mayor of Godawari Municipality Gajendra Maharjan, in a corruption case.
Maharjan and 13 others were acquitted by the Special Court on August 14, 2024.
Challenging that verdict, the CIAA filed an appeal at the Supreme Court on Friday.
The CIAA had originally registered a corruption case against Mayor Maharjan and the 13 others on June 3, 2024.
According to Ganesh Bahadur Adhikari, assistant spokesperson for the CIAA, the anti-corruption body had filed the corruption case claiming that the municipality enacted a law allowing revenue collection at rates lower than those prescribed by provincial law.
The CIAA had alleged that while selling and distributing stone and gravel of Godawari, the municipality charged below the government-set rates, causing a financial loss of Rs 1.04 billion to the government.
It had demanded recovery of the loss amount as compensation from the accused.
