A newborn baby who was abducted from a hospital in Parsa has been rescued.
The infant was abducted from Narayani Hospital in Birgunj Metropolitan City-4 at around 4 p.m. on August 31.
According to Superintendent of Police Pawan Kumar Bhattarai, the baby was rescued by the District Police Office, Parsa, at 1 p.m. on Monday.
"The baby was reportedly taken to the maternity attendant's room under the pretext of playing with relatives. From there, they took the infant to their home," he said. “Had we not acted promptly, it could have led to a major problem.”
Police began their operation from 5 p.m. on August 31.
According to SP Bhattarai, police stepped up strict surveillance at border checkpoints immediately after receiving the information. They also moved the investigation forward by examining and analyzing CCTV footage from inside and outside the hospital.
Sixteen hours after the investigation began, police located the baby at 1 p.m. on Monday with 27-year-old Sabina Khatun, a resident of Birgunj Metropolitan City-16.
SP Bhattarai personally rescued the infant from the room where the child was being kept and arrested Khatun.
Following the rescue, the newborn was handed back to the child’s 27-year-old mother, who is from Sarlahi.
According to Bhattarai, the preliminary investigation suggests that the suspect may have intended to keep the child as her own.
