Former minister and Nepali Congress leader Mohammad Aftab Alam, who was released from prison on Wednesday, has been hospitalized after suffering a stroke.
He is undergoing treatment in the intensive care unit (ICU) of Annapurna Neuro Hospital at Maitighar, Kathmandu, the hospital informed Setopati.
“He has been admitted to the ICU, and treatment is ongoing,” a doctor at the hospital said. “He suffered a stroke. By the time he was brought here, about three hours had already passed.”
According to the doctor, Alam's family brought him to the hospital at around 10:30 a.m. on Friday.
Doctor's involved in Alam's treatment said that his condition is currently stable.
“He was in a very weak state when he was brought in the morning,” the doctor said. “Even his weakness has improved now.”
Alam, an NC leader from Rautahat, had been in jail for five years after being convicted by the Rautahat District Court. He was accused of burning people alive in a brick kiln. The incident dates back to before the first Constituent Assembly election in 2008.
On Wednesday, the Birgunj bench of the Janakpur High Court overturned the district court’s decision and acquitted Alam along with three others.
He returned home on Wednesday evening after being released from Nakkhu Prison.
Alam also suffers from high blood pressure and diabetes.
