The Supreme Court (SC) on Thursday has sent former Nepal Police IGP Ramesh Chand Thakuri, who had moved the court demanding he be allowed to stay outside the jail during review of his corruption case, to Dilli Bazar Jail.
Thakuri, who had absconded after the SC deemed him to be corrupt two years ago, had reached the Apex Court at four Thursday afternoon with an application that he be allowed to stay outside during the review of the case.
Deputy spokesperson at the SC Devendra Dhakal told Setopati that Thakuri's plea for review of the case by allowing him to stay outside taking necessary surety was rejected. "His application demanding that he be allowed the facility to stay outside the jail as per the regulation about court logistics has been rejected," Dhakal said.
He added that Chand was sent to the jail after deputy registrar at the litigation section of the SC refused to register his application.
A bench of the then chief justice Sushila Karki had sentenced him for one year and fined Rs 40,000 finding him guilty in corruption of armored personnel carrier for the Nepal Police personnel to be deployed in the UN Mission in Darfur, Sudan.
Former IGPs Om Bikram Rana and Hem Bahadur Gurung, AIGs Shyam Singh Thapa and Deepak Singh Thangden were also ruled guilty in the Sudan corruption case. Rana was given a two-year sentence and fine of Rs 50,000, and Thakuri and the AIGs one-year sentence and fine of Rs 40,000 each.
The four others have already been released after serving their sentence.
The Commission for Investigation of Abuse of Authority (CIAA) had lodged corruption case against former IGPs and AIGs and contractor Manoj Bharati claiming that there was corruption of Rs 440 million in the Sudan scam.
