The Nepali Congress faction led by former party president Sher Bahadur Deuba has begun preparations for a parallel general convention.
The Deuba faction is set to begin ward-level conventions on Thursday after forming a 15th general convention preparation committee under the coordination of Shashank Koirala.
The Nepali Congress led by Gagan Thapa had already held its ward conventions on September 19 and 20. The Deuba faction did not participate in those conventions.
The Deuba faction is therefore holding its own ward conventions from Thursday.
Deuba has also appealed to party leaders and workers to participate enthusiastically in the ward conventions being held across the country from Thursday as part of the party’s 15th general convention.
In an appeal issued on Thursday, Deuba said that the convention is important for a party with a history spanning nearly eight decades.
He said that the general convention would be important for further strengthening the sacrifices, contributions, and struggles made by the party for a democratic republican system of government, full press freedom, and the rule of law.
The Deuba faction said that it will hold conventions in all 6,743 wards across the country.
Deuba also expressed a commitment to resolve differences within the party through the 15th general convention and further strengthen the party.
In the Deuba faction’s convention process, party leaders will not be required to be elected from the ward level. Continuing the previous provision of the party statute, the Deuba faction has made office-bearers and central members automatic general convention representatives. The Gagan Thapa-led faction, by contrast, required leaders at all levels to come through the ward-level process.
The Deuba faction did not participate in the special general convention held in January. It has scheduled its 15th general convention for December 7 to 9.
