The CPN-UML has objected to the arrest of party Vice-chairman Bishnu Paudel, saying the government detained him in a manner intended to humiliate him.
The decision was made during a meeting of the parliamentary party held at the party headquarters in Chyasal on Tuesday, according to Ain Bahadur Mahar, chief whip of the UML parliamentary party in the House of Representatives.
The party also concluded that Paudel's arrest was extrajudicial and contrary to the rule of law, Mahar said.
According to him, the meeting also demanded Paudel's immediate release.
“Yesterday, CPN-UML Vice-chairman and former deputy prime minister and finance minister Bishnu Prasad Paudel was arrested in Surkhet in a non-political, extrajudicial, and vindictive manner. He was arrested in a humiliating manner. He has a personal security officer (PSO) and is in regular contact with the state. He was scheduled to travel to Kathmandu today. Despite knowing all this, the state brought him to Kathmandu overnight via public transport with the intent to harass him. This is extrajudicial and illegal. This is against the rule of law. The UML parliamentary party has strongly opposed and condemned this arrest, and has also demanded his immediate and unconditional release."
Mahara said that party Chairman KP Sharma Oli addressed the meeting.
He added that the meeting passed seven different proposals, including a vote of thanks to Chairman Oli.
