The Nepal Gen-Z Front has expressed objection to the mistreatment of coordinator Rakshya Bam during a protest at Maitighar in Kathmandu.
Issuing a statement on Friday, the Front condemned the incident, stating that their coordinator Bam was mistreated.
“We strongly condemn the mistreatment of our coordinator Rakshya Bam during a peaceful protest on Thursday,” the statement said. “The Constitution of Nepal guarantees every citizen the right to assemble peacefully without arms and ensures freedom of opinion and expression. Such an attack on an activist raising her voice for truth and justice while exercising her constitutional rights cannot be tolerated at all in a civilized democratic society."
Leaders of the Gen Z movement have been protesting at Maitighar for the past six days, demanding the release of the report submitted by the inquiry commission led by former judge Gauri Bahadur Karki, which was formed to probe the Gen Z movement held on September 8 and 9 last year. During the protest, injured leaders of the movement chanted slogans against Bam.
The Front stated that mistreatment of protestors would weaken the movement further.
“All participants of this movement – injured individuals, families of martyrs, activists, and leaders – are partners in the same journey. There may be disagreements in this journey. Questions may arise. Pain can sometimes turn into anger. However, answers to these questions should be sought from the state, not directed at each other,” the statement added. “The state is still hiding the truth, and the likelihood of the inquiry commission’s report not being made public is increasing. In such a situation, mistreatment and attack on a fellow activist will only weaken the movement further.”
