The Supreme Court has demanded a written response from CPN-UML Secretary Mahesh Basnet in a contempt of court case filed against him.
On Sunday, a bench of Justices Til Prasad Shrestha and Mahesh Sharma Paudel issued the order seeking a written explanation from Basnet.
The contempt case was filed against Basnet at the Supreme Court on Wednesday, accusing him of making derogatory remarks against judges regarding the sub-judice case concerning the reinstatement of the House of Representatives, which was dissolved following the Gen Z movement.
Advocate Laban Neupane filed the case against the UML secretary, arguing that Basnet had expressed opinions on a matter currently under consideration at the Supreme Court.
Basnet is accused of making statements such as: "The chief justice and other judges disappear by claiming to have illnesses they don't actually have; the judicial process is delayed or blocked due to terror, fear, greed, or interference; and the chief justice switches off his phone and avoids responsibility under pressure from powerful forces."
Furthermore, the petitioner claims that Basnet publicly dishonored the judiciary by stating, "We are under foreign attack, and it is not just our Supreme Court, high courts, district courts that were burned. This makes one feel that our entire judicial system itself has been set ablaze."
