The 11th general convention of the CPN-UML is scheduled to take place in Kathmandu from December 13.
The three-day general convention will elect the party's new leadership.
KP Sharma Oli is preparing to lead the party for a third term.
He is set to be challenged by the party's Senior Vice-chairman Ishwar Pokharel.
Speaking at an interaction with editors in Kathmandu on Thursday, Senior Vice-chairman Pokharel said that consensus on leadership could be reached by the time of the convention, but only under one condition.
"In the current context, if he (Oli) agrees to become the patron and play the role of a guardian, and announces the next chairperson from the hall, then consensus is possible," he said.
Pokharel said that there would be no consensus under any other circumstances.
He added that consensus could be reached if Chairman Oli announces anyone other than himself as chairman.
"Even if he announces a name other than mine, it will have my support," he said.
Pokharel mentioned that they have yet to hold discussions on forming a full panel for other office-bearer positions along with the chairman.
Pokharel said that whether he wins or loses, he would accept the result and remain active in the party.
“Not being able to accept results is a weakness of our political culture. If victory is not achieved, we will always remain with the UML as UML members. There will be no deviation whatsoever," he said.
