Foreign Minister Arzu Rana Deuba and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi held talks in Hong Kong on Friday.
The foreign minister’s secretariat confirmed the meeting.
Minister Rana arrived in Hong Kong, a special administrative region of China, at the invitation of Minister Wang to attend the signing ceremony of the Convention on the Establishment of the International Organization for Mediation (IOMed), according to her secretariat.
The convention was signed by 32 countries on Friday. The IOMed – in line with the UN Charter – aims to resolve conflicts through mediation, complementing international dispute settlement mechanisms.
During the talks, the two leaders discussed Nepal-China relations, matters of mutual interest and shared concern, and the 70th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries, which both are celebrating this year.
Highlighting Nepal’s emphasis on its relationship with China, Minister Rana expressed gratitude through Foreign Minister Wang to the Chinese government and people for their long-standing support and coordination in Nepal’s economic and social development.
She also expressed Nepal’s expectation for continued Chinese support in various sectors, including economic and technical cooperation, technology transfer, and foreign direct investment in the coming days.
On the occasion, Minister Rana reiterated Nepal’s unwavering commitment to the One China Policy, clarifWangng that Nepal remains firm in not allowing its territory to be used against China.
She also extended special thanks to the Chinese government for its participation in the recently concluded Sagarmatha Sambaad (Sagarmatha Dialogue).
The meeting also touched upon high-level visits between Nepal and China in recent years, including Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli’s official visit to China last December and the implementation of agreements and understandings reached during the visit.
As this year marks the 70th anniversary of Nepal-China diplomatic relations, Minister Rana invited Foreign Minister Wang to visit Nepal on the occasion.
Noting that 2025 is being celebrated as "Visit Nepal Year" in commemoration of the 70th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries, Minister Rana expressed Nepal’s eagerness to welcome as many Chinese tourists as possible this year.
During the meeting, Foreign Minister Wang congratulated the Nepal government through Minister Rana on successfully hosting the Sagarmatha Dialogue.
He expressed China’s readiness to collaborate with Nepal on climate change mitigation and environmental protection in the coming days.
He affirmed that China’s support to Nepal would continue in the coming days and expressed hope for future coordination with Nepal through the international mediation organization being established under China’s coordination.
Foreign Minister Wang urged the Nepali government, through Minister Rana, to advance the implementation of agreements and understandings reached during PM Oli’s visit to China.
Accepting Minister Rana’s invitation, the Chinese foreign minister confirmed his plans to visit Nepal.
He also praised the programs being conducted and proposed under Minister Rana’s leadership in Nepal’s diplomatic arena, and, on behalf of the Chinese government, extended a special invitation to her to participate in the Global Women’s Leadership Forum, according to her secretariat.
