The Supreme Court has dismissed a habeas corpus petition filed on behalf of Inam Sapkota, who was arrested during an investigation into his contacts with former chief justice Cholendra Shumsher Rana.
A bench of Justices Hari Prasad Phuyal and Sunil Kumar Pokharel ruled to dismiss the petition filed by Sapkota’s wife, Kabita Pandey.
The District Police Range, Kathmandu, has detained Sapkota on charges of indecent behavior.
His detention was extended by seven days to facilitate further investigation.
After former chief justice Rana was arrested, police also examined his phone. According to sources, information obtained from the phone led investigators to Sapkota, who is from Jhapa.
A team from the Special Bureau took Sapkota into custody and questioned him. During the investigation, authorities examined his relationship with Rana, as well as his contacts with Armed Police Force Additional Inspector General (AIG) Banshi Raj Dahal.
During police questioning, Sapkota reportedly claimed that Rana had used him. Sources said that investigators were also looking into Sapkota’s connections with other high-ranking individuals.
Sapkota’s wife, Pandey, had filed the habeas corpus petition, claiming that he was being held in unlawful detention. The Supreme Court has now dismissed the petition.
