Three municipal police officers have been questioned regarding the incident involving the death of ride-sharing driver Ganesh Nepali.
Police said that three municipal police officers – two women and one man – who were deployed on the road behind the Department of Passports in Tripureshwar on Thursday, were summoned and questioned about the incident.
Nepali, 25, from Soru Rural Municipality-2, Mugu, passed away on Friday morning while undergoing treatment at Bir Hospital. He had set himself on fire on the road behind the Department of Passports in Tripureshwar around 1:40 p.m. on Thursday.
Nepali was a ride-sharing driver.
The incident originated from a dispute with officials of the Kathmandu Metropolitan Police Force over a wheel lock placed on his motorcycle after he arrived at the department to drop off a passenger.
According to Superintendent of Police Pawan Bhattarai, Nepali had arrived at the location around 11 a.m. After the initial dispute, he left the scene but returned around 1:40 p.m.
SP Bhattarai said that when the metropolitan [olice attempted to take away his motorcycle, he attempted self-immolation.
After he set himself on fire, bystanders extinguished the flames by pouring water on him. Subsequently, police and members of the public led him to the main road, where a taxi was hailed to transport him to Bir Hospital.
The body of the deceased is currently being prepared to be taken to Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital for a postmortem examination.
