The High Powered Committee for Integrated Development of Bagmati Civilization (HPCIDBC) has issued a notice asking squatters staying at the Kirtipur holding center to vacate the facility within five days.
The committee posted the notice, instructing the squatters to vacate the holding center and arrange accommodation for themselves between Monday and Friday.
Currently, 203 individuals from 68 families are staying at the Kirtipur holding center. Top Bahadur Baniya, information officer for the HPCIDBC, said that the committee has offered Rs 25,000 to each family for self-relocation.
According to Baniya, the funds will be deposited into the squatters' bank accounts before they are required to leave. They have been given five days to finalize their accommodation arrangements.
"We have already asked them to submit an application along with their bank account details to receive relief assistance. Once we receive their account details, we will provide Rs 25,000 for self-management," he explained. "Following this, if they are verified as genuine landless squatters, they will receive Rs 15,000 per month in the coming days."
On April 25-26 and May 1-3, high-risk settlements along the riverbanks of the Kathmandu Valley were cleared. Following these evictions, 2,608 individuals registered their names as squatters.
Under a government decision, those currently living in various holding centers are to be provided Rs 25,000 per month to assist in their self-relocation. The current eviction process is being carried out by providing this financial assistance.
"We have issued the notice to vacate the Kirtipur holding center first," Baniya said. "Discussions are underway regarding what to do with those who refuse to leave and whether the government should make arrangements for them elsewhere.”
He informed Setopati that the plan is to facilitate self-relocation for those staying in various holding centers in the initial phase, and that work is proceeding accordingly.
