The Kathmandu District Court has extended the custody of 26 individuals, including Durga Prasai, arrested in connection with the Tinkune incident, by four days.
According to the court’s information officer Deepak Kumar Shrestha, a bench of Judge Harka Bahadur Chhetri on Sunday granted permission to keep Prasai and 25 others in custody for four more days for investigation.
Shrestha said that no arguments took place in Sunday's hearing and the court only extended the remand of the 26 individuals.
Police are investigating them for offenses against the state and organized crime. On charges of organized crime, police can detain suspects for up to 60 days for investigation.
Earlier, on Friday, the Supreme Court ordered the release of Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RPP) Senior Vice-chairman Rabindra Mishra on personal guarantee.
Mishra had filed a habeas corpus writ petition through his wife Sarika Karki, arguing that the police were still keeping him in custody even though they had completed recording his statement and investigating him.
Hearing the petition, a bench of Justices Til Prasad Shrestha and Kumar Chudal ordered Mishra’s release on personal guarantee.
On March 28, royalists held a protest in Tinkune, Kathmandu, demanding the restoration of monarchy. The protest was led by Prasai, who was designated “People’s Commander” by the “Joint People’s Movement Committee” led by Nawaraj Subedi.
However, the protest turned violent, resulting in the deaths of two individuals and incidents of arson, vandalism and looting.
