The Supreme Court (SC) has issued an interim order ruling that private hospitals cannot shirk from responsibility of treating COVID-19 patients.
A single bench of Justice Manoj Sharma has also instructed the private hospitals to prepare for treatment of infected persons and safety of doctors and workers involved in the delivery of their services.
"No private health institution seems to have the rights of shirking from responsibility of treating those infected by coronavirus in any pretext," the interim order reads. "Do, therefore, make necessary arrangements to dispense service of beds, ICUs and ventilators available in the private health institutions."
The bench hearing the petition filed by advocate Pushpa Raj Paudel on behalf of the Supreme Court Bar Association has called both the sides on Sunday to discuss whether to give continuity to the interim order or not.
