Doctors are discussing about calling the Indian doctors who carried out the first kidney transplant on Prime Minister (PM) KP Sharma Oli in New Delhi 12 years ago for the second transplant as well.
Oli is scheduled to undergo second kidney transplant at the Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital (TUTH) on Wednesday. Doctors will decide about whether to call the Indian doctors who were involved in the transplant at the Apollo Hospital 12 years ago or not today.
"We do not need an outside team. But we are thinking about calling for backup as the transplant will be done on the prime minister. But it has yet to be decided. We will sit and discuss about it today itself," Chief of the kidney transplant department at the hospital Dr Prem Raj Gyawali told Setopati. "India is nearby. We will call Indians if we call a foreign team."
The team led by Dr Gyawali will carry out the transplant on PM Oli.
The TUTH has a success rate of 98 percent in kidney transplants.
A woman, niece in relation, will donate kidney to Prime Minister (PM) KP Sharma Oli.
Anjana Ghimire, daughter-in-law in relation, had donated the kidney that was transplanted on Oli 12 years ago in New Delhi. She was just 21 years while donating the kidney. The age of niece who will donate the kidney this time has not been revealed.
Oli, whose transplanted kidney has stopped functioning, is on regular dialysis in recent times. He underwent plasmapheresis seven times in Singapore in August 2019.
Plasmapheresis is a term used to refer to a broad range of procedures through which blood components are filtered outside the body. It was done on PM Oli, who had a kidney transplant 12 years ago, to remove antibodies for immunosuppression
