The Banke District Administration has imposed curfew in Kohalpur due to violence after a truck hit a school girl at around 10 Sunday morning.
Assistant Chief District Officer (CDO) Krishna Kanta Upadhyaya told Setopati that the district security committee meeting in the afternoon has decided to issue prohibitory orders after 3 pm.
Prakriti Chand, 12, of Kohalpur-11 was injured when the truck (Na 2 Kha 9459) hit a scooter (Bhe 6 Pa 2740) Sunday morning.
Chand has been flown to Kathmandu on a Nepal Army (NA) chopper brought from Surkhet, according to Upadhyaya.
The seventh grader at Tribhuvan Higher Secondary School, who was riding pillion on the scooter, is critically injured and has lost both her feet.
The irate locals and school children set the truck on fire and vandalized other vehicles after the accident.
The police started to use force instead of trying to convince the students to control the situation, the locals and students accuse.
They entered the school after the students fled to escape from the aggressive police. They did not listen even when the teachers urged them to not thrash students inside the school premises and indiscriminately beat teachers and students alike.
They dragged teacher Indra BC and other students from inside the classrooms, according to teacher Rishi Devkota who claimed that eight to 10 students have been arrested.
The school has around 2,500 students and they all attacked the police following the latter's atrocities. Students of plus-two also joined the junior students after their classes ended at around the same time.
The students started to pelt stones at the police and the latter retaliated. The police beat local Nepali Congress (NC) leader Krishna Karki when he urged them to not pelt stones at school students and also thrashed Chairman of Kohalpur Chamber of Commerce Chakra Adhikari.
The sheer number of students and locals overwhelmed the police who retreated back to the police station. The students pelted stones even at the police station and torched the police canteen.
The police fired around two dozen blank rounds and tear gas shells in equal numbers to take the situation under control.
DSP at the Area Police Office, Kohalpur Hem Bahadur Shahi, a few other police personnel and some students and locals have been injured in the ensuing clash.
