The Kathmandu District Court has jailed the main accused in the Durbar Marg rape case for five years.
A bench of Justice Kamal Prasad Pokharel on November 6 has ordered a jail term of five years and two months for the main accused Shailesh Karki of Ramechhap, and the victim be paid Rs 700,000 in reparation in the incident that happened almost two years ago.
The other three persons involved in the incident have been jailed for 14 months, according to Registrar at the court Ananda Shrestha.
A woman had complained of gang rape by four men including Karki, her boyfriend, Bikash Gautam, Dipak Shrestha and Ravi Paudel at Hotel Landmark in Durbar Marg on January 21, 2018.
But the officers at the Metropolitan Police Circle, Durbar Marg facilitated a financial settlement instead of registering the complaint. The settlement of the rape case was widely condemned once it came to the fore.
The then Inspector at the Durbar Marg Circle Laxman Singh Thakuri and Sub Inspector Chandra Bhandari were suspended for facilitating a financial settlement for a grave crime like rape. Incharge at Durbar Marg Circle DSP Tilak Bharati was also transferred and was being investigated by the Nepal Police headquarters.
Two staffers of Landmark were also arrested for helping in the rape.
