One person has been killed when police opened fire on a crowd in Sarlahi on Sunday.
Kewal Mahato, 27, of Ishwarpur municipality 12 was killed when police opened fire after a clash with the locals at Banke near the border with Mahottari district, according to Chief of Province 2 Police DIG Pradyumna Karki.
He claimed that around 20 police personnel have been injured in the clash after a boy Amit Raya died while swimming in a local pond on Saturday.
The body was recovered only on Sunday despite the police looking for the boy throughout the night. "The locals snatched the body and started to demonstrate on the highway," DIG Karki said. "There were clashes on separate occasions after that."
He revealed that police also used tear gas shells and rubber pellets, and fired blank shots to control the crowd but to no avail. He claimed that the police then opened fire on instruction of the district security committee.
