Nepal is vulnerable to disasters at different times due to its geographical situation. However, it is wanting when it comes to disaster preparedness.
The government is not found making the required arrangements in time for disaster preparedness although the country is hit by earthquake, flood, landslide, storm, inundation every year, said speakers at a program here Friday.
The program on 'Disaster risk reduction and human rights' was organized by National Human Rights Commission (NHRC).
NHRC acting chairperson Prakash Wosti said the government is found not doing enough for disaster risk reduction and preparedness although various types of natural disasters are frequent in Nepal owing to its geographical location and topography.
He said although the NHRC has made recommendations to the government through its reports after carrying out on-site study of incidences of earthquake, epidemics, flood and landslide for adopting preparedness, it has mostly gone unheeded.
The NHRC stated that although there are reformative provisions in the Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Act, 2074, it lacked adequate provisions and due to this the citizens have not been able to avail of their human rights during the time of disasters.
Nepal is in the 50th position in terms of road fatalities, in the 30th position in terms of flood and landslide and in the 11th position from the perspective of earthquake in the global disaster risk index.
