The Lalitpur Metropolitan City is gearing up to transform itself into a bicycle-friendly metropolis. It is constructing cycle-lanes from Kupondole to Lagankhel.
Mayor of Lalitpur Metropolitan City Chiri Babu Maharjan informed that the metropolis has allocated Rs 5,000,000 in the fiscal year 2075/76 for the same.
"We've allocated the budget for making the city cycle-friendly. We will commence our work from that amount," Mayor Maharjan said, "If it yields positive results, we will allocate Rs 50 million for the next time."
The metropolis is also preparing to make new laws to make the city cycle-friendly. The metropolis has entrusted the responsibility of making drafts of designs and budget estimation among others to Nepal Cycle Society. It is also working to construct cycle stand on its premise.
"Now the local level can also formulate the laws. We will move ahead by formulating the laws related to cycle. We will request the society to prepare a draft in a way that the law will be passed during the town assembly to be held on July 10," he said.
He further said that the metropolis will look for partnership with Godavari municipality for further expansion once the first phase of work completes.
"I am discussing about it with mayor of Godavari municipality. He is very positive about this. One can go to Godavari from here in cycle. Both Lalitpur and Godavari will reap benefits if the number of tourists rises," he said.
