Manual worker Top Narayan Dhakal is much aware of the importance of education in life.
Dhakal who believes that he could not seize a ‘quality life’ for being an uneducated spends the days hammering into rocks to crush into small pieces (pebbles) so that his children need not to quit education due to financial issues.
Moreover, he has been a role model of a responsible parent dedicated to the education of his children in the entire village. His daughter has completed the Bachelors degree in Pharmacy in Butwal. As he said, the performance of his daughter was good in school and after passing out from school, she expressed her interest in studying Pharmacy.
Dhakal is dedicated to be a support in making his daughter’s dream true and has been crushing stones since the past four years. He hopes that better education for children will help them achieve a good future.
The man collects rocks from the Kaligandaki River, and breaks them into small pieces for supply. He invests the income in the education of his children. He produces over 10 sacks of pebbles on a daily basis. There is no problem to find the market for the products as clients visit his home with a growing scale of construction works lately in the Rampur municipality area.
"My income also go to pay educational bills for my daughter and son. The society has a deep-seated educational discrimination against daughters. But I do not follow such bad belief and have done my best for education of my daughter," he said.
His daughter as the fresh graduate is searching for a job and the son is pursuing management stream.
Besides, in a bid to widen his income spheres, he has also ventured into some other jobs. Now he is raising goats and running a grocery in his own house.
On his retirement from the job, the 50-year-old Dhakal said he would continue it until his body supported.
More than 50 families have involved in the job of crushing stones. Their attraction to the odd job has been influenced by the traders, who visit their doorsteps and buy a sack of crushed stones for Rs 50.
