The inauguration of the much-awaited project which would ensure permanent solution to the perpetual flooding problems in Bhaktapur area - Hanumante Corridor Project - has taken place at Bhaktapur Tuesday.
Lawmaker Mahesh Basnet laid the foundation stone for the Corridor Project at the bridge over the Hanumante River that is situated in the bordering place between Madhyapur Thimi and Bhaktapur along the Arniko Highway.
The contract for the construction of the two kilometers Corridor in the first phase has been signed for Rs 810 million, according to the High Powered Bagmati Civilization Integrated Development Project Chief, Ashish Ghimire.
Since the width of the Hanumante River is shrinking due to human encroachment, its breadth would be widened for the Construction of the Corridor.
Many places adjacent to the River were being inundated in the monsoon with the swollen Hanumante River. The River that flows through all four Municipalities in Bhaktapur district - Changunarayan, Bhaktapur, Surya Binayak and Madhyapur Thimi - is nine kilometers long.
Project Chief Ghimire shared that the Hanumante River would be divided into four sections to begin with the construction of Hanumante Corridor for two kilometers of the River.
The Corridor Project is aimed to be built within two years.
On the occasion, lawmaker Basnet said that the construction of Hanumante Corridor would help prevent the water from the Hanumante River to enter in the human settlements.
"It would also help in promoting greenery along the Hanumante River and reduce the volume of vehicles in Bhaktapur," said Basnet, warning that none should dare to mix sewage in the Hanumante River and pollute it.
Similarly, Bhaktapur District Coordination Committee Chief Nawaraj Gelal opined that the Corridor had added one new step to the development of Bhaktapur.
Likewise, Surya Binayak Municipality mayor Basudev Thapa viewed that the development of Bhaktapur had made a stride with the election of the local representatives. He ensured the face of all villages in Bhaktapur would change for good in four years."
Nepali Congress Bhaktapur's youth leader Asta Kumar Kabe spoke of the need for all the local leadership to forge ahead in union for the greater good of Bhaktapur.
Madhyapur Thimi Municipality former mayor Madan Krishna Shrestha underscored the need to seek solution to the internal issues through dialogue.
