The Kathmandu District Court has sentenced Chinese nationals Pan Wei Ming and Yang Wei Wing for five years and slapped a fine of Rs 430.056 million each in connection to the smuggling of 88 kilograms of gold through Kerung border point with China.
Manoj Adhikari, who was arrested with the gold from Chhetrapati, Kathmandu in August, 2017, has also been fined an equal amount but sentenced for three years.
Information officer at the court Madan Bhattarai said a bench of Justice Kamal Prasad Pokharel on Tuesday gave clean chit to 10 persons accused in the case.
The Chinese nationals, who have yet to be apprehended, have been punished as per the Customs Act, according to the court. Adhikari, the mule, has been deemed to be an accomplice by the court and hence been sentenced for just three years.
The smuggled gold has been valued at Rs 430.056 million.
Police had filed case against 13 persons including three Chinese nationals. The court had released eight on bail during the hearing for judicial custody.
