The Special Court has convicted the then chief of BP Koirala Memorial Cancer Hospital in Bharatpur Dr Bhakta Man Shrestha of corruption.
A joint bench of Chairman of the Special Court Baburam Regmi, and justices Ratna Bahadur Bagchand and Pramod Kumar Shrestha Baidya on Monday has deemed that Dr Shrestha amassed wealth worth Rs 11,866,776 through corruption and slapped a one year sentence on him, according to Registrar at the court Bhim Kumar Shrestha.
The Commission for Investigation of Abuse of Authority (CIAA) had filed a corruption case against him on February 14, 2016 claiming he amassed wealth worth Rs 16,757,113 through corruption while working as the hospital's chief for three years.
The court has deemed that he amassed wealth worth Rs 4,890,337 through legal means and ruled that he amassed properties worth Rs 11,866,776 illegally. It has ordered confiscation of his properties worth Rs 11,866,776 and fined him an equal amount.
Dr Shrestha's wife Sheelu Shrestha, who worked with the hospital as food supplier, however has been acquitted in the case.
