A man has been arrested from Kathmandu on charge of pouring acid on two girls in Rautahat two weeks ago.
Chief of Rautahat Police SP Kedar Dhakal said Ram Babu Paswan, 50, of Chandrapur-6 has been arrested and investigation has been initiated.
Samjhana Das, 18, and her sister Sushmita, 15, were attacked with acid September 11 midnight while they were sleeping at their home.
Paswan has been arrested from a hospital in Kirtipur, Kathmandu, where he had accompanied the girls' father for their treatment, on the basis of call details, complaint of the father identifying him as the culprit and statement of the girls.
Paswan had called Samjhana 180 times in 15 days, SP Dhakal said citing the call details, and added that investigation has been started on assumption that Paswan may have poured acid in anger after Samjhana didn't pick the phone despite making so many calls.
Police said Paswan had reached Kathmandu with the Das family pretending to be helpful. SP Dhakal said there is a wound that looks like an acid burn in Paswan's hand.
Hundreds of locals gathered in front of the Area Police Office in Chandranigahapur as the news of arrest of the person involved in acid attack spread. They have demanded stringent action against the attacker.
