Doctors protest demanding amendment of new General Code (Photos)

The doctors on Sunday staged a demonstration protesting the General Criminal Code that came into effect on August 17. Hundreds of doctors and health workers took part in the rally that was organized by Nepal Medical Association. They marched from Maitighar Mandala to New Baneshwor in the Capital to protest the Criminal Code. The doctors said they are protesting some provisions in new General Code that puts the doctors behind bars if the patients die during treatment. Speaking at a corner meet, Chairman of the Nepal Medical Association Mukti Ram Shrestha stated that they will continue to struggle until the General Code is amended. They also warned of launching stringent protest against the government if it fails to remove the legal provisions under which the doctors may face jail term. Speaking at the protest program, Dr Govinda KC claimed that the new General Code is against the public. Stating that such provisions will not let any doctor work, KC further drew serious attention of government to hold discussion with the stakeholders concerned to formulate appropriate rules by removing the provisions. They warned of making protest programs public including shutting down of all hospital services across the country if their demands are not addressed by Friday.
