KMC collects over Rs 500,000 fine from those throwing garbage haphazardly

The Kathmandu Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) has collected more than Rs 500,000 in penalty from those throwing garbage in a haphazard manner in the fiscal year 2017/18. The KMC collected the amount as fine after taking action against 181 persons from various places including Kalimati chowk, Kalanki chowk, Bagbazar, Putalisadak, Balkhu and Chabahil for throwing garbage haphazardly. A similar amount of Rs 500,000 had been collected from 142 persons involved in such act in the fiscal year 2016/17. KMC Environment Management Division Chief Hari Kunwar said that action was taken against 181 persons for throwing garbage haphazardly. Mostly garbage is thrown haphazardly at Putalisadak, Bagbazar, New Road, and Jamal area during night, he added. Around 1,000 metric tonnes of garbage is collected from Kathmandu Valley every day. Of this, the KMC has been managing 800 metric tonnes of garbage daily.
