Pits resulting from haphazard sand and gravel mining have claimed many human lives in Mahottari district every year.
The latest victim is 16-year-old Sushma Thing of local Bardibas. Thing died due to drowning in one such pit formed out of sand excavation. The incident happened on Saturday while trying out swimming in the water-filled pit, police said.
She is an eighth grader at the Laxmi Narayan Secondary School at Bardibas-10. Two people died in the district in similar circumstances over the last two years.
The locals have urged the district authorities to check the haphazard sand and pebble mining in their locality and require such mine operators to operate only at designated places as well as to fill the big pits they have dug in course of sand extraction, following the death of people each year in similar situations.
