The central executive committee of the Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RPP) on Wednesday failed to make a concrete decision on whether the party should join provincial governments.
Following the meeting, RPP Chairman Rajendra Lingden said that an appropriate decision on provincial governments would be taken at an appropriate time.
The RPP holds a decisive position in government formation in provinces including Gandaki and Bagmati.
The issue was discussed during Wednesday’s central executive committee meeting.
“We discussed possible changes in some provincial governments today. The RPP is not involved in power-centric politics. Our position is that the Nepali Congress, CPN-UML, and the NCP should form provincial governments together. It has been decided to entrust the chairman with the responsibility of making an appropriate decision at an appropriate time if circumstances arise that require a special decision,” Lingden said.
In a statement issued after the meeting, party spokesperson Mohan Shrestha said that the RPP is not involved in the “numbers game” of provincial power politics.
“In the current situation, RPP is neither involved in nor eager to participate in the numerical maneuvering of power politics in any provincial government. Our position remains that the provincial governments should continue to be formed by the Nepali Congress, CPN-UML, and the NCP. If a situation arises that requires a decision to be made regarding provincial governments, Chairman Rajendra Lingden has been entrusted with the responsibility of making an appropriate decision at an appropriate time, taking the broader interests of the party into account. The meeting instructs all provincial parliamentary parties and provincial assembly members not to engage in any power-centric activities without the party’s instruction,” the statement said.
