The Cabinet has decided to allow lawmakers to appoint personal secretaries.
Minister for Law, Justice, and Parliamentary Affairs Sobita Gautam told Setopati that the decision was made during the previous Cabinet meeting.
The Cabinet revived the provision allowing lawmakers to appoint personal secretaries by amending the schedule of the Act Related to Remuneration and Facilities for Office-bearers and Members of Federal Parliament, 2016.
"It has been decided to restore the same facilities that lawmakers were previously receiving," said Minister Gautam. "Now, they will be able to appoint personal secretaries."
The interim government led by Sushila Karki had scrapped the facility of personal secretaries for lawmakers.
The Ministry of Law, Justice, and Parliamentary Affairs had submitted a proposal to the Cabinet to restore the provision. The Office of the Prime Minister and Council of Ministers had not moved the proposal forward for a long time.
With the notice on the amendment to the schedule published in the Nepal Gazette, lawmakers are now permitted to appoint personal secretaries.
Lawmakers will be entitled to an officer-level personal secretary with a bachelor’s degree.
