An all-party meeting held on Wednesday has decided to establish a high-level political mechanism.
Speaking after the meeting, Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) spokesperson Jagdish Kharel said that the mechanism will discuss the Bhotekoshi flood and the subsequent search and rescue, relief, rehabilitation, and reconstruction efforts.
According to him, it was decided to make the all-party meetings being held continuously after the flood sustainable in the form of an all-party mechanism.
“It has been decided that this high-level political mechanism, coordinated by Rastriya Swatantra Party President Rabi Lamichhane, will remain in place to hold sustained discussions on disaster risk reduction and management, as well as overall development and construction issues,” spokesperson Kharel told reporters after the meeting.
He said that the mechanism will include representatives from the Nepali Congress, CPN-UML, Nepali Communist Party, Shram Sanskriti Party, Rastriya Prajatantra Party, Janata Samajwadi Party Nepal, Janamat Party, among others.
He added that the Rastriya Janamorcha, which has representation in the National Assembly, would also be included and would be formally requested to join the mechanism.
The all-party meeting also decided to form a parliamentary committee within a week, Kharel said. All political parties will be represented on the committee in proportion to the number of seats they hold in Parliament.
Kharel said that Wednesday’s meeting held an extensive review and discussion of the damage caused by the Bhotekoshi flood, including the loss of lives and property, as well as the search, rescue, relief, rehabilitation, and reconstruction work carried out so far under the government’s leadership, contributions made by political parties, and efforts by various state agencies.
The meeting also discussed Prime Minister Balen Shah’s upcoming participation in the United Nations General Assembly.
“Important leaders from various political parties also put forward their views and suggestions on what issues Nepal should raise on the global stage and what discussions it should advance,” Kharel said.
He said that the government and the ruling Rastriya Swatantra Party have taken the matter seriously.
