Nepali Congress President Gagan Thapa has said that there is a limit to unauthorized activities conducted outside the party office, and that he will not tolerate anyone crossing that limit.
Speaking at an event organized on Tuesday to exchange New Year greetings, Thapa made the remarks while indirectly referring to the faction led by former president Sher Bahadur Deuba that has been running parallel activities within the party.
Thapa was present at the party’s unit office in Ward No. 30 of Kathmandu, where he formally launched the active membership update campaign. During the event, he also updated his own active membership.
"I have an appeal for all party leaders. The New Year has just begun. My goal is to take everyone along. I request everyone to stop creating unnecessary friction. I need to move the party forward at a fast pace. We need to hold conventions, prepare the country for new elections, and build a party capable of fulfilling its duty as the opposition," he said. "I need everyone's support in this. Those who can, please help me. Those who can't, do not disturb me. There is a limit to unauthorized activities outside the party office, and going beyond that limit cannot be tolerated."
Thapa said that since he is in the leadership position, he will remain polite and flexible with all sides to unite and move the party forward. However, his politeness and flexibility should not be mistaken for weakness, he added.
“As I hold the responsibility of the party, a person in a responsible position must be more polite and more flexible. He must engage in dialogue. I have learned this from party leaders. That is why I try to meet my colleagues as much as possible and try to explain what I have learned. I will take everyone along. But while doing so, please do not consider my flexibility and politeness as my weakness. I am also bound by the party’s statute,” he said.
Thapa also mentioned that the Nepali Congress will play the role of opposition constructively. He said that the Congress will support and cooperate with the government on all works carried out in accordance with the law. He added that the party will also extend its support and cooperation on the government’s good governance initiatives. He emphasized that the party will also play a role in coordinating with provincial and local level governments for that purpose.
