The CPN-UML has decided not to field a candidate for the position of speaker of the House of Representatives.
UML Secretary Padma Aryal said that the party will not nominate anyone for the post. "We will not register a candidacy for the post of speaker," she said.
The filing of nominations for the speaker's election was scheduled for Friday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) Vice-president Dol Prasad (DP) Aryal has registered his candidacy for the post.
The Nepali Congress and the Nepali Communist Party have said that they will support the RSP candidate for speaker. However, since the RSP alone holds a majority in the House, support of other parties may not be necessary.
With the UML also opting out of the race, Aryal is set to be elected unopposed as speaker.
The election for speaker is scheduled for April 5.
