General Secretary of the CPN (Masal) Mohan Bikram Singh has returned to open politics.
The party decided to bring Singh, who had been semi-underground for 57 years, into open politics.
A central committee meeting of the CPN (Masal) held on July 25 and 26 made the decision to bring General Secretary Singh into open politics.
“The central committee meeting has decided to allow the general secretary to enter open politics,” said Chitra Bahadur KC, chairman of the Rastriya Janamorcha, the electoral front of CPN (Masal), in a conversation with Setopati. “Even though the general secretary has entered open politics, the central committee remains underground.”
KC said that the number of central committee members could not be disclosed.
He explained that the central committee remains underground due to the ongoing crises in the country.
“The country is facing crises, foreign interference has increased, people are jailed for embezzling cooperative funds, and others are signing petitions for revenge. In such times of crisis, the central committee remains underground,” KC said.
He also noted that it is not surprising for General Secretary Singh to enter open politics as he was already semi-underground.
“What’s surprising about the general secretary entering open politics?” he said. “The party had decided to send him underground, and now the party has decided to bring him into open politics. We follow what the party decides.”
Singh spent nine years in prison before being released on March 17, 1971.
“From that time until now, he has been semi-underground,” KC said. “When he was released from jail, the autocratic Panchayat system was at its peak. He engaged in campaigns from Mechi to Mahakali while remaining underground.”
Although there was a warrant for Singh during the Panchayat era, it was lifted after the multiparty system was restored. However, the party kept him semi-underground, KC said.
