The government has backed down from passing the land-related bill following opposition from the Nepali Congress.
The government was preparing to pass the bill in Wednesday’s meeting of the House of Representatives, and it was included in the tentative agenda. However, the agenda for Wednesday’s meeting does not include land-related matters.
The agenda for Wednesday’s meeting included presenting the land-related for clause-wise discussion.
However, NC General Secretary Bishwa Prakash Sharma, who is also a lawmaker, demanded early Wednesday morning that the bill to amend some land-related acts be removed from the House of Representatives’ agenda.
Citing the need to amend the bill and build consensus on it, Sharma objected to the preparations to directly present the bill in Parliament for passage.
He also demanded that prior consensus be sought or the bill be sent to the committee concerned for discussion.
The CPN (Maoist Center) has also been demanding that the land-related bill be sent to the parliamentary committee concerned for clause-wise discussion.
The government had previously introduced a land-related ordinance. However, after the Janata Samajwadi Party Nepal opposed the ordinance, the government withdrew it and said that it would introduce a bill instead.
